ALAT was formed on 22 Nov 1954, following its experience in French-Indochina with helicopters, principally in the combat medical evacuation role.

EHR - Escadrille d Helicopteres de Reconnaissance
EHM - Escadrille d Helicopteres de Manouvre

In September 2009 the ALAT changed the structure of codes on the helicopters. From code ranges designated for the squadrons toward a fixed code to the helicopter. These 3 digit are the last 3 from the civilian F-M... number.
