Developed for the 1960s U.S. Army Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) program as the YOH-4, the Bell 206 failed to win the contract. Bell redesigned the airframe and successfully marketed the aircraft commercially. The new design was eventually selected by the military as the OH-57/OH-58 Kiowa series. As of 2012, more than 6,300 Bell 206s, including all variants, had been delivered since production began in 1967.
