The Kaman K-20, a single engine all-weather utility helicopter was selected in 1956 by the US Navy to be used from aircraft carriers in the search and rescue role. The HU2K-1 ( later UH-2 ) entered service on early 1960s. In 1968 it was retrofitted to the UH-2C variant with two turboshaft engines.
In 1970 the Seasprite was selected to be the LAMPS Mk1 (Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System) as the SH-2D. Equipped with advanced sensors and weaponry, this variant was an escort ship-based helicopter and was join by new built SH-2F from 1981. |
