The US Air Force start receving the HH-53 Super Jolly Green Giant in 1968 as replacement for the
HH-3 Jolly Green Giant as their long range combat search and rescue (CSAR) helicopter.
The basically similiar CH-53C was used for general transport work, Missile Site support, and aerial drone recovery.
The much improved MH-53 Pave Low upgrade was introduced in the 1980s which in turn were finally replaced by the CV-22B Osprey in 2008.
